So, how to stop a bad habit? Here’s how:
- If you want to quit smoking, eat sunflower seeds or suck hard candies when you crave for a cigarette (it reduces craving and withdrawal symptoms);
- Find you motivation – something that can make you change and pull yourself together. Motivation can be given by your children, your wife, or your new girlfriend who is not willing to put up with your bad habits;

- Make a contract (in writing) with yourself and strictly abide by it. Remember that quitting a bad habit is not easy, so mobilize your willpower and arm yourself with patience;
- You can bet somebody a tidy sum that you will be able to get rid of your bad habit. It can help people who are short of cash. You can even give this person an IOU – write in it that if you smoke (drink, etc), you will give him/her such and such amount of money. Ideally, it all should be done in the presence of your friends;
- Reduce the dose or the frequency. For example, if you usually consume alcohol, let’s say, five times a week (what is very often and will definitely hurt your health), try to drink only four times a week, and then three times a week, etc. Stop the reduction when you find that the dose or the frequency is not excessive anymore;
- Find a hobby. Nowadays, it is very easy. Sports, cars, photography, etc – anything will do. The main thing is to distract yourself from the bad habit;
- Find a person you can confide in. It will help you prevent relapses. Ask him/her to keep an eye on what you do. If you take a cigarette (or stick a finger up your nose to pick it, or are about to gnaw your nails, etc), this person should draw your attention to it. The beauty of this method is that it helps prevent also AUTOMATIC relapses (because you can start smoking or picking your nose or gnawing your nails without even being aware of it);
- Learn about the consequences of the bad habit you want to break. Say, you smoke (and want to quit). So, read about the risks of smoking: lung cancer, coronary heart disease, emphysema, and so on;
- Try to find an alternative solution. For instance, if you drink hard liquors, you can switch over to low-alcohol beverages. Use e-cigarettes instead of smoking tobacco. And so forth.
