How To Avoid Procrastination

People who tend to procrastinate greatly complicate their lives. In this post, I will give you some tips and guidelines on how to avoid procrastination, and then will recommend you a tool that allows addressing the issue of procrastinating in an easy yet very efficient way.

Here is the list of guidelines for fighting procrastination:

-    A long way starts with a small step. If you have a lot of work to do, you needn’t do everything in one go. For example, you have to write your graduation thesis. Don’t try to write it in one sitting – instead, start with some small step, let’s say, with finding the necessary information. It’s a quite simple task, isn’t it? So, it won’t scare you away. Actually, the most important thing about overcoming procrastination is TO START DOING what you have to do;

-    Draw a plan. “To do this, I first need to do that”. Making up a detailed plan of work you should complete, you may be amazed to find out that there is nothing difficult and nothing to be afraid of about the work you have to do;

-    Schedule your time. Let every stage of work have its deadline. It disciplines and allows working more efficiently;

-    If the necessity to adhere to a plan of work makes you feel depressed, then try the inverse approach: plan not your work, but all the rest. Allot time for sleep, eating, rest, hobbies, etc. Thus, your work will be done during, as it were, free time, becoming a sort of leisure activities. It is psychologically easier to do work using this approach; besides, the latter allows understanding how much time you spend on the work process;

-    If the task you have to accomplish arouses in you negative emotions, you can say to yourself what you feel and why, in your opinion, you feel it. Try to understand why you put off the accomplishment of the task. Are you afraid of a failure? Does it seem to you that you won’t manage to do it properly? Do you apprehend negative reactions from other people? Putting your fears into words helps getting rid of them;

-    First of all, complete the most difficult and unpleasant work. Accomplish those hard tasks in the morning, and the rest of the work – during the remaining hours of the day;

-    Reward yourself for each task you accomplished and any work you did. Oftentimes, we do something because, if we don’t do it, some NEGATIVE things will happen. Adding some POSITIVE reinforcement will increase motivation;

-    Improve yourself and your skills. Enroll in some courses or trainings. Upgrading skills will enable you to solve even the most complicated problems; thus, you won’t be afraid of tasks on your to-do list.
