How To Cope With Divorce

In this post, I will provide you with some guidelines on how to cope with divorce. First, I will list those guidelines, and then, I will briefly mention a very useful tool that can make the task of coping with divorce much simpler.

The list of the guidelines is below:

-    Just after the divorce, it is best to adopt the following mindset: admit that you will hardly be able to feel free and independent right away. It will take some time before you can communicate with you ex-husband without tears and a hailstorm of emotions. Your inner turmoil during this period of time is quite natural;

-    Start taking active actions: have a change of scenery. After all, you have every right to throw out all your ex’s junk and to refurbish your house or apartment just like you want. If you, on the contrary, moved in with your parents, then make it so that living there is comfortable for everyone;

-    Engage in something that will occupy most of your time and energy, so that you have neither time nor energy to moan and groan. Plan your daily schedule down to the minute. Your main task is to plan it so that just you and not somebody else are responsible for attaining the goals set;

-    Allow yourself, at least once, doing something that you may not have done before. You have every right to do it. Do some silly pleasant thing your ex would have nagged you to death for;

-    Take care of yourself. First, this will bring you deep moral satisfaction if you cross paths with your ex. Second, though you may not be able to manage your emotions properly yet, you are perfectly able to cherish your physical body. And it is common knowledge that body and mind are interconnected;

-    Get ready to answer a lot of questions asked by your relatives, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues eager to intrude on your feelings. The most frequently asked question will be: “So why did you parted, after all?” Prepare a short yet substantial answer to it beforehand – for example, “I’m sorry, but I’m not ready to discuss this topic yet,” – and don’t hesitate to use this cliché;

-    Instead of cursing you ex, thank him for all the good things he gave to you, for family life experience, and for the fact that now, you are free and you can start a new, better relationship. Repeat this thought aloud until you realize that it is pure truth;

-    Set priorities: first of all, think about YOUR interests, and not about those of your ex. Live so that YOU, and not he, feel comfortable, even if formerly everything was the other way around;

-    Every time you want to feel sorry for yourself, mischievously “feel sorry” for your “poor and unhappy” ex, for whom it is, no doubt, so hard to be apart from you. In that situation, sarcasm and sense of humor are your best friends. Assume that the divorce means new opportunities for you and a significant loss for him.

OK, so much for the guidelines on how to cope with divorce. Now, let me tell you a few words about the tool I mentioned at the beginning of the post.
