How To Be Vegan

Veganism is, without doubt, a noble cause. Animals are not our slaves; they are not our toys, either. So, do we really have the right to eat or to exploit them? Vegans believe that we don’t. They treat animals with ultimate respect and try to get other people to do the same. If you consider becoming one of them, this post will be useful for you.

Because, you see, becoming a vegan can be interesting, relatively easy, and even fun – if done right. But it can also complicate your life – or to ruin it altogether – if done in the wrong way. So, read on, and I will teach you how to be vegan without doing any harm to yourself.

So, my first tip is as follows: DON’T MAKE ANY SUDDEN DIET CHANGES! Those changes should be gradual. Accustom yourself to your new lifestyle slowly, without straining your organism too much. Remove one kind of non-vegetarian food per week. Here’s the recommended sequence:

-    Meat;
-    Eggs;
-    Cheese;
-    Dairy products;
-    Ingredients.

The transition should be smooth and not drastic! You don’t need to hurt your health or to develop disgust for veganism. Move step by step and remember – the more haste, the less speed. Last but not least – listen to your body. And honor its requests.

Now, to my second tip. Prior to switching to vegan diet, LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT VEGAN NUTRITION, VEGAN FOOD, AND HEALTH. Because, after you become a vegan, you will still need to get protein, calcium, minerals, vitamins, etc.

High-protein foods are:

-    Nuts;
-    Beans;
-    Seeds;
-    Quinoa;
-    Tofu.

Foods containing healthy fats are:

-    Olive oil;
-    Nuts;
-    Seeds;
-    Avocados.

Vegan sources of calcium are:

-    Kale;
-    Collard greens;
-    Blackstrap molasses;
-    Tempeh;
-    Turnip greens, etc.

I gave you the above lists only as examples. There are plenty of vegetarian alternatives to meat, egg and dairy.

Don’t go hungry (being a vegan doesn’t imply being an ascetic) – and make sure the food you eat is not only vegan, but also TASTY. You should enjoy your new lifestyle, and not be a martyr. Don’t forget to get a good vegan cookbook!

My third tip is the following: visit your physician and tell him/her that you plan to go vegan. He/she will tell you how to be vegan and not ruin your health – based on the state of your organism. For instance, people with anemia should get enough iron. An issue that concerns everyone is getting vitamin B-12 (it is not found in plants). So, it is better to go to the doctor and to ask for his/her advice.

My fourth and last tip is: BE PERSISTENT AND DON’T GIVE UP! And remember – you are not alone. There are lots and lots of people who are passionate about veganism. There are a lot of different places that you can find them – vegan restaurants, websites, etc, etc, etc. I suggest you to meet such people and to join the vegan community as soon as possible – this will greatly expedite matters (and, what is not less important, you will find lots of new friends!).

Finally… As I mentioned above, veganism is a noble cause, and now I’d like to do something good for you for your considering being a vegan:-).
