Does Hypnotherapy Work?

In this post, I will try to answer a question which is very popular on the web – does hypnotherapy work? To cut a long story short, the answer is “yes”. However, a more accurate reply should be “yes, it works, but with some reservations”.

So, what are those reservations? Here’s the first one: the efficiency of hypnotherapy depends on the type of hypnosis used. The second reservation is as follows: the above efficiency also depends on what condition one tries to cure with hypnosis. When the right kind of hypnosis is used to treat a condition that can be cured by means of it – then yes, hypnotherapy works perfectly. It goes without saying that hypnosis should be used skillfully (by a person who knows how to hypnotize properly) and consistently, with perseverance (no condition can be cured overnight).

Now, let’s go into some more details and discuss the two aforementioned reservations one by one. So, we’ll start with the types of hypnosis. There are three kinds of hypnosis, namely:

-    Directive hypnosis;
-    Non-directive (Ericksonian) hypnosis;
-    Self-hypnosis.

During directive hypnosis, the hypnotist ORDERS you to do something. Non-directive hypnosis consists in INDIRECT SUGGESTION rather than ordering, the suggestions being slipped into hypnotist’s speech in such a way that the patient is not even aware of them. As for the term “self-hypnosis”, it is pretty self-explanatory.

And now, some important facts about the types of hypnosis. NOT MORE THAN 30% of people are susceptible to directive hypnosis. As for non-directive one, AT LEAST 80% of patients can be hypnotized through it. Self-hypnosis is somewhere in the middle. So, when choosing the type of hypnosis for hypnotherapy, choose non-directive one if you plan to be treated by hypnotist. Alternatively, you can try to resort to self-hypnosis, which is powerful, too (if you learn how to use it properly, of course).

After ascertaining what kinds of hypnosis exist and what characteristics they possess, let’s go to the following question: how does hypnotherapy work with different conditions? By means of hypnosis, one can cure:

-    Addictions (smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction; gambling);
-    Over-eating (and, consequently, overweight and obesity);
-    Anxiety, panic attacks, phobias; depression;
-    Lack of confidence, blushing;
-    Anger, bad temper; jealousy;
-    Stammering; irritable bowel.

The list goes on.

Now, what CANNOT be cured with hypnosis? Those are such conditions as:

-    Psychoses;
-    Epilepsy;
-    Serious psychiatric or mental health problems (to be more accurate, they should be treated by a physician, who may use hypnosis as a supplementary treatment).

In conclusion, I would like to repeat what I said earlier about consistency and perseverance: hypnosis will work over time. Don’t expect your sickness (or problem) to disappear right away. Give hypnotherapy time to do its work. In this case, the answer to the question “Does hypnotherapy work?” will always be affirmative (provided that this therapy is used to treat what can be cured through it).

And now, I’d like to recommend you a very special tool – a computer program that will allow you to practice self-hypnosis while sitting at the computer and doing what you want (you won’t need to concentrate, to relax, etc – the suggestion will happen all by itself, bypassing your conscious). You can also use it on mobile devices like iPod. This software reprograms your mind according to the instructions you give it. By means of this tool, you will be able to suggest yourself anything you want and to become healthier, happier, more free, more calm, you name it!
